The Best Credit Cards for Wedding Expenses (2026 Guide)

The Best Credit Cards for Wedding Expenses (2026 Guide)

If you’re getting married in 2026 or 2027, you may be about to spend more money in a few months than you normally would in an entire year.

Venue.

Catering.

Photographer.

Wedding dress.

Flowers.

DJ.

Invitations.

Decorations.

Honeymoon.

Those expenses have to be paid somehow.

So before you start writing checks or swiping your debit card, ask yourself one question:

Could my wedding expenses help pay for my honeymoon?

With the right travel credit card strategy, the answer could be yes.

Wedding expenses can be particularly useful for earning credit card welcome bonuses because you’re already planning to spend a significant amount of money.

The trick is choosing the right card before those bills are paid.

Here are some of the best types of travel credit cards to consider for wedding expenses in 2026.

Quick Answer: Best Credit Cards for Wedding Expenses

If you don’t want to read the entire guide, here’s the short version:

💍 Best Overall for Wedding Expenses:

Chase Sapphire Preferred®

A strong option for couples who want flexible travel points and don’t know exactly which airline or hotel they’ll eventually use.

💳 Best for General Wedding Spending:

Capital One Venture Rewards

Its biggest advantage is simplicity: 2X miles on every purchase, making it particularly useful for wedding vendors that don’t fall into traditional bonus categories.

🍽️ Best for Restaurants & Pre-Wedding Dining:

American Express® Gold Card

It earns 4X Membership Rewards points at restaurants worldwide, subject to the card’s annual spending limit. But there’s an important catch for weddings: caterers generally aren’t considered restaurants for the bonus category.

✈️ Best Airline Card:

The airline card that matches your honeymoon flight

If you already know which airline you’re likely to fly, an airline-specific card can sometimes make more sense than a general travel card.

Now let’s look at each one.

#1 — Chase Sapphire Preferred: Best Overall Wedding Card

If you’re just getting started with travel rewards, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® is one of the first cards I’d investigate.

Why?

FLEXIBILITY.

Instead of earning miles that can only be used with one airline, you earn Chase Ultimate Rewards® points.

Those points can potentially be used through Chase Travel or transferred to participating airline and hotel loyalty programs.

That flexibility is especially valuable when you’re planning a honeymoon.

Maybe you’re considering:

Hawaii

Fiji

Italy

The Caribbean

Mexico

You may not know exactly which airline you’ll fly or which hotel you’ll book yet.

That’s okay.

Flexible points give you options.

Why Chase Can Make Sense for Wedding Spending

Wedding expenses can help you reach the spending requirement for a welcome bonus without creating unnecessary spending.

Imagine you already owe:

Photographer: $2,000

Florist: $1,000

Wedding rentals: $1,000

That’s $4,000 you’re already planning to spend.

Rather than simply paying those bills from your checking account, those expenses could potentially help you qualify for a valuable travel welcome bonus.

That’s the IDoLetsGo strategy:

Don’t create spending. Redirect spending.

One warning: don’t assume every wedding vendor will earn a special bonus category. How a purchase is coded depends on the merchant.

The welcome bonus may therefore be far more important than whether a particular vendor earns 1X, 2X, or 3X.

#2 — Capital One Venture Rewards: Best for Everyday Wedding Expenses

If you want something simple, Capital One Venture Rewards is one of my favorite choices for wedding spending.

Why?

2X MILES ON EVERY PURCHASE.

Capital One currently advertises 2X miles on every purchase with Venture. The card has a $95 annual fee.

That makes it particularly interesting for weddings.

Why?

Because wedding purchases don’t always fit neatly into credit card bonus categories.

Think about:

Photographer.

Florist.

Wedding dress.

DJ.

Decorations.

Rentals.

Invitations.

Wedding planner.

Cake.

Venue.

Many of these purchases may simply earn the card’s standard rewards rate.

With Venture, that’s straightforward:

$1 spent = 2 miles.

No worrying about whether your florist codes as a florist.

No wondering whether your photographer qualifies for a special category.

No complicated category strategy.

You simply earn 2X miles on eligible purchases.

A $10,000 Wedding Example

Suppose you have $10,000 of eligible wedding expenses that can be paid by credit card without excessive processing fees.

At 2X miles per dollar, that could generate:

20,000 MILES

And that’s before considering any welcome bonus you may qualify for.

Capital One currently lists a limited-time Venture offer with 75,000 bonus miles plus a $300 stays credit, subject to the offer’s requirements and terms.

That’s why welcome bonuses can be so important.

#3 — American Express Gold: Best for Restaurant Spending

The American Express® Gold Card can be a rewards powerhouse for food.

It currently earns:

4X POINTS AT RESTAURANTS WORLDWIDE

on up to $50,000 in eligible restaurant purchases per calendar year, then 1X.

It also earns:

4X POINTS AT U.S. SUPERMARKETS

on up to $25,000 in eligible purchases per calendar year, then 1X.

That can be useful during the wedding-planning period for things like:

Engagement dinners.

Date nights.

Meals while traveling to visit venues.

Groceries for showers or parties purchased from qualifying U.S. supermarkets.

But there’s a VERY important wedding-specific catch.

Your wedding caterer may NOT earn 4X.

American Express specifically says caterers aren’t considered restaurants for purposes of its restaurant rewards category.

That’s why you should never assume:

“My catering bill is food, so I’ll earn 4X.”

You may not.

For a $5,000 catering bill, that’s a pretty important distinction.

The Amex Gold also carries a substantially higher annual fee than Venture: currently $325.

So I’d look at this card differently.

It’s potentially excellent for couples who already spend heavily on restaurants and qualifying supermarkets.

But I wouldn’t choose it solely because you have a giant catering bill coming.

#4 — An Airline Card: Best If You Already Know Your Honeymoon Airline

Sometimes the smartest card isn’t Chase, Capital One, or Amex.

It’s the airline you’re actually going to fly.

Let’s say you’ve already researched your honeymoon and know:

We’re flying Delta.

Now an eligible Delta credit card welcome offer could be much more relevant.

Why?

Because instead of collecting generic points and figuring out what to do with them later, you’re earning miles toward a specific goal:

GET US TO THE HONEYMOON.

Airline cards can also include airline-specific benefits such as checked-bag benefits, depending on the card.

For example, if you’re flying Delta and checking luggage, the right Delta card could potentially save you money beyond the value of the miles themselves.

Which Card Should You Use for Catering?

This is one of the questions I expect couples to have.

And the answer is:

Don’t automatically choose a dining card.

A caterer isn’t necessarily processed as a restaurant.

That’s especially important with the Amex Gold, where American Express explicitly excludes caterers from its restaurant category.

Instead, compare:

1. The welcome bonus you’re trying to earn

versus

2. The card’s normal rewards rate

versus

3. Any credit card processing fee charged by the caterer.

If a $5,000 catering payment helps you earn a huge welcome bonus, it could be extremely valuable.

If you’re simply paying a 3% processing fee to earn ordinary rewards, the math may be much less attractive.

Always do the math first.

Which Card Should You Use for Your Photographer?

Photographers typically aren’t a major travel-card bonus category.

That makes this exactly the type of purchase where a card earning strong rewards on everyday purchases — such as the 2X miles offered by Capital One Venture — can be attractive.

But there’s another possibility.

Use the photographer payment to help earn a welcome bonus.

A $2,000 photographer deposit could potentially get you halfway toward a $4,000 spending requirement.

That’s usually much more interesting than worrying about earning one extra point per dollar.

Which Card Should You Use for Your Wedding Dress?

Same strategy.

Wedding dresses generally aren’t a traditional travel rewards bonus category.

So think:

Welcome bonus first.

Everyday earning rate second.

If you’re buying a $2,500 wedding dress and already intended to spend that money, that’s $2,500 of potential progress toward a welcome bonus.

Don’t wait until after you’ve bought the dress to think about the credit card.

Which Card Should You Use for the Venue?

This can be tricky.

A venue might code as:

A hotel.

A restaurant.

An event venue.

Something completely different.

And that coding can determine whether you receive bonus points.

If you’re paying thousands of dollars, you can ask the venue how credit card transactions are processed.

But again, the bigger opportunity may be the welcome bonus.

Imagine your venue requires a:

$4,000 DEPOSIT.

If you already have the money budgeted, that single payment could potentially satisfy the entire spending requirement for some credit card welcome offers.

One wedding payment.

One welcome bonus.

Potentially tens of thousands of travel points.

That’s where wedding credit card strategy gets interesting.

Don’t Forget Credit Card Processing Fees

This is extremely important with wedding vendors.

Some vendors charge:

2%

3%

or even more to pay by credit card.

Let’s say your venue charges a 3% fee on a $5,000 payment.

That’s:

$150 EXTRA.

Should you pay it?

Maybe.

If that $5,000 payment unlocks a welcome bonus worth substantially more than $150 to you, paying the fee could make sense.

If you’re only earning normal purchase rewards, it might not.

Never blindly pay a processing fee just because you want points.

Calculate the cost versus the reward.

The Best Wedding Credit Card Strategy May Actually Be TWO Cards

Remember:

There are two people getting married.

That creates an opportunity most generic credit card comparisons don’t emphasize.

PLAYER 1 + PLAYER 2.

One partner could earn a welcome bonus designed to help cover the flights.

The other could earn points toward the honeymoon hotel.

For example:

Partner #1

Wedding expenses → Travel card welcome bonus → Honeymoon flights

Partner #2

Other wedding expenses → Second welcome bonus → Honeymoon hotel

Now the exact same wedding budget is working toward two different parts of your honeymoon.

That’s much more powerful than simply asking:

“What’s the best credit card?”

The better question may be:

“What’s the best combination of cards for us?”

Don’t Ignore Chase’s 5/24 Rule

Before opening several cards, learn about the Chase 5/24 rule.

Chase generally considers how many qualifying credit card accounts you’ve opened within the previous 24 months when evaluating applications for many Chase cards.

That means the order in which you apply can matter.

If you’re interested in Chase cards, don’t randomly open several other cards first without understanding how that could affect your strategy.

Plan first.

Apply second.

Our 2026 Wedding Credit Card Picks

Here’s the simplest way to think about it:

💍 Want flexible travel points?

Look at Chase Sapphire Preferred.

💳 Have lots of wedding purchases that don’t fit bonus categories?

Look at Capital One Venture Rewards.

🍽️ Spend heavily at restaurants and qualifying U.S. supermarkets?

Look at American Express Gold.

But remember: wedding caterers generally don’t qualify for Amex’s restaurant bonus.

✈️ Already know which airline you’re taking?

Consider that airline’s credit card.

Flying Delta?

The Most Important Card Isn’t Necessarily the One With the Highest Rewards Rate

This is probably the biggest lesson in this guide.

Imagine Card A earns:

1 point per dollar

and Card B earns:

2 points per dollar.

You have a $4,000 wedding expense.

Card A would normally earn:

4,000 points

Card B would earn:

8,000 points

Obviously Card B looks better.

But what if putting that $4,000 on Card A also completes a welcome offer worth 75,000 bonus points?

Now Card A could potentially generate:

79,000 POINTS.

That’s why welcome bonuses can completely change the math.

When you’re planning a wedding, don’t obsess over earning one additional point per dollar while ignoring a welcome bonus potentially worth tens of thousands of points.

Turn Your Wedding Budget Into Your Honeymoon Budget

You’re already spending the money.

That’s what makes this strategy so powerful.

If your wedding budget includes:

$3,000 photographer

$5,000 catering

$2,000 flowers

$2,500 dress

$1,500 decorations

that’s:

$14,000 OF PLANNED SPENDING.

We’re not suggesting you spend another $14,000.

We’re asking:

What could the $14,000 you’re already spending earn?

Could one welcome bonus help cover your flights?

Could another cover several hotel nights?

Could your everyday rewards help pay for a rental car?

Could airline-card benefits save you checked-bag fees?

That’s how we want you to think about wedding expenses.

Find the Right Card for YOUR Wedding

There isn’t one credit card that’s perfect for every couple.

The best option depends on:

How much you’re spending

What you’re buying

Where you’re honeymooning

Which airlines you’re considering

How many points you need

Your credit

Which cards you already have

That’s exactly why we built the Find My Card quiz at I Do! Let’s Go!

Don’t choose a credit card because someone on the internet said it’s the “best.”

Start with your wedding and your honeymoon.

Then find the rewards strategy that fits them.

Your wedding is already expensive.

You might as well see if those expenses can help pay for the honeymoon.

Don’t spend more. Spend smarter.

Plan your spending. Earn your rewards. Take the honeymoon.

I Do! Let’s Go!

Credit card offers, welcome bonuses, rewards rates, annual fees, merchant categories, transfer partners, and eligibility requirements can change. Merchant coding determines whether purchases qualify for bonus categories. Some wedding vendors charge additional fees for credit card payments. Never spend more than you can afford or carry a balance solely to earn rewards. Always review the issuer’s current terms before applying.
